vintage downtown las vegas wedding | calico basin wedding photography

Oh how much I loved photographing this confetti themed vintage and mid-century elopement. We started off shooting around downtown Las Vegas at a couple of the still standing retro motels, Tod Motor Motel, and Diamond Inn motel with the pink elephant and then traveled to the infamous Las Vegas sign. We later then had a very intimate desert ceremony held on the deck at Calico Basin in Red Rock state park where even the burros came out to celebrate with us.

location: Downtown Las Vegas | ceremony location: Calico Basin in Red Rock | officiant: Peachy Keen Unions | mid century daisy vintage wedding dress: Karla Spectic | wedding shoes: Marc Jacobs | white pom daisies bouquet: Katelyn Degraw from Something Old Weddings | hair: Dollheads | grooms attire: Freemans Sporting Club and APC | black velvet bow tie: Thomas Pink | wooden sunglasses: Shwood Shop

from the bride:

“So our little story goes like this…

We’re both from Australia, have been together for 8 years and just recently returned to Melbourne after 15 months of overseas travel. We were never really interested in getting married, but now that I think about it, it was just that we never wanted a wedding. When we began planning our way back home to Melbourne, it felt very right to get married as a beautiful way to end the year long travel adventure we shared.

The idea to wed in Vegas honestly started out as something we’d kind of joke about. However after we discovered Gaby Jeter (our wonderful photographer) and realised that Vegas has some pretty charming aspects to it, we couldn’t imagine being married anywhere else.

Organising a wedding/ elopement/ private ceremony, whatever you want to call it, in Vegas wasn’t as easy as I thought it would be, and actually a bit of a nightmare at times. After reading countless online reviews about the infamous Vegas chapels, that we only imagined would be really cute and kitsch (so wrong), we saw a recurring theme of people being scammed, and we kinda didn’t want to be scammed on our wedding day, you know?

Being able to choose our own officiant and ceremony location helped to keep the level of Vegas tacky-ness pretty low. Because neither of us had ever been to Vegas before, we relied on Google maps to help us find photo locations and then Gaby would confirm if the colourful mid-century buildings we liked were still standing.

All in all, I can’t recommend eloping enough (Vegas or not). It’s incredibly romantic, it’s fun, and you get to spend the whole day with your beloved prancing around in beautiful clothes with (maybe) the biggest secret you’ve ever kept. Then you get to call your family and friends back home and share the beautiful, happy news. Our parents and a couple of others did already know – couldn’t quite do that to them!

Now that we’re back home, we’re having a little party to celebrate our marriage – minus any wedding stress. Just an opportunity to wear my dress again(!) and celebrate with our nearest and dearest.”

exploring the saguaro desert and sedona arizona

Part III from our trip to Arizona.

Being that it was my first time in Phoenix, it was too my first time seeing saguaro cacti growing wildly in the desert. I was in awe! It was also my first time visiting Sedona, AZ; what an amazing and beautiful place! On the ride between phoenix & sedona, there’s this cute little place called Rock Springs Cafe in Black Canyon City with literally the best pies in the world! I’m not even kidding! Normally I would order one dessert for my son & I to share, but I had to order three! The cafe is known for having delicious pies but they also have a wedding venue hidden in the back. We got there just when the sun was setting and oh my was the ceremony location breathtaking!  One day, I hope to come back to actually photograph a wedding there while eating mountains of pie!

Lizzie contacted me literally a week before her wedding date & we managed to get everything together the day prior, haha! I had such a fun time running around old las vegas with them! Since I wasn’t able to take photos during their ceremony at A Little White Wedding Chapel, we went around the infamous chapel grounds taking photos. Followed by visiting sketchy neighborhoods, getting frozen custard at Luv It (my fav), & ending the evening taking photos with Elvis’s pink cadillac at the world famous, The Little Vegas Chapel (best wedding chapel in Las Vegas, seriously!). I dearly love elopements like this!

I’m totally sold with any mention of the words “desert,” and “elopement!” Then Stephanie mentioned bringing fun props like pink plastic lawn flamingos, mexican blankets, a large yellow ampersand, and a handmade flower crown, you wouldn’t believe how thrilled I was emailing her everyday! My lovely couple are all the way from Germany. They went to Atlanta to pick up their best friends, and flew out to Las Vegas to have a boho vintage inspired desert elopement. My absolute favorite moment during their wedding is when Steph’s bridesmaid surprised her after the ceremony with singing the song, All I Want is You by Barry Louis Polisar, along with her ukelele. I was literally crying along with Stephanie, & Angie Kelly (their officiant). It was just so sweet – I get all teary just thinking about it.
